Again, Lady Gaga has created quite the buzz with her latest video off her album, Born This Way, for You & I. I think this is the best music video she’s made thus far, and this song is simply fabulous on its own. For those who are quite confused about the message of the video, this song is about one of her previous relationships about a man who was always controlling and wanting to change her. As you can she, she initially willed herself to change for him again and again, but in the end she realized that you can’t really love someone else unless you can love yourself first, and that explains the scene of her making out with herself. So, she comes to terms with this and heads back to Nebraska to marry the man (which of course, he finally accepts her for who she is). Genius.
Some of the scenes of torture really bothered me at first, and I’m not a person who can condone that type of violence against women (I was actually quite confused about the scenes, but when I finally understood the metaphor, I was ‘okay’ with it). However, when you think about relationships, they are complicated and the emotions associated with love/lust are quite turbulent, especially in one where the man can’t accept you. I take the torture scenes throughout as a metaphor for the violent emotions one can feel in such a masochistic relationship.
I’m one of those people who believe that you can’t love someone until you can love yourself first. I’ve only figured this out just before I turned 18, which would explain all the years in my teenager life of why I remained single – and still am.
And finally, you can’t ignore the fashion in this video – it is simply stunning. My favorite pieces are the Chanel trousers and the Philip Treacy hat. The opening outfit will definitely be iconic for Lady Gaga.
